About the Toyota HiLux

The Toyota HiLux has been Australia’s most popular vehicle for many years now.

Sales show now sign of fading, either, despite the latest-generation model having been around since 2015.

The comprehensive Toyota Hilux range is headed by three key models: WorkMate, SR and SR5.

Each model contains various cabin configurations in either pick-up or cab-chassis styles (and 4x4 or 4x2), and you need a sophisticated flowchart to best analyse the mountain of options available.

The base-model 4x2 WorkMate is powered by a 122kW/245Nm 2.7-litre petrol engine, which is mated to either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

A 110kW/400Nm 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine is available for a selection of 4x2 and 4x4 models, which runs through either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

Finally, a 150kW/500Nm 2.8-litre turbo-diesel powers the remaining top-spec variants, with this engine also connected to either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission (torque is limited to 420Nm with the manual transmission).

SR5+, Rogue and Rugged X variants – featuring a premium selection of equipment – came and disappeared. A revised Rogue model is coming to the range in late 2022, while a sportier GR Sport variant is due in the second half of 2023.

HiLux rivals are plentiful, and include the Ford Ranger, GWM Cannon Ute, Isuzu D-Max, LDV T60, Mazda BT-50, Mitsubishi Triton, Nissan Navara, and Volkswagen Amarok.
